Brighton have signed midfielder Aaron Mooy from Championship side Huddersfield on a season-long loan.

But the Australian, 28, has signed a new three-year contract with the Terriers, running until 2022.

Huddersfield say Mooy has joined Brighton to "pursue his ambitions of playing in the Premier League".

Mooy played 29 times for Huddersfield in the Premier League last season, scoring three goals, but could not stop their relegation to the second tier.

Huddersfield head coach Jan Siewert said: "Aaron was adamant that he wanted to test himself again in the Premier League when Brighton's interest came in, and we didn't want an issue where we had a disillusioned player on the pitch in the final year of his contract.

"We had to look after the interests of Huddersfield Town and couldn't let him leave on a free at the end of the season, so him signing a new contract ahead of his loan move gives the club and the player possibilities for the future."

Mooy joined the Terriers from Manchester City in 2017 for a then record fee of £8m.

His original deal at Huddersfield had been due to expire in 2020. His new contract also includes the option of a further year.

Mooy has scored 11 goals in 120 appearances for the the Terriers.

Brighton boss Graham Potter said: "We are delighted to welcome Aaron to the club. He has played very well over the past two seasons in the Premier League, and will bring a different option and added competition to our midfield.

"He's been a talisman for Huddersfield in recent seasons with his performances on the field and he's proved to be an excellent professional both on and off the pitch.

"I'm looking forward to working with him. He is another good addition to our squad ahead of the new season."

Meanwhile, Brighton have signed French right-back Romaric Yapi from Paris St-Germain.

The 19-year-old has signed a one-year deal and will join the under-23 squad.

    Unlike most players, Mooy has shown some level of consideration and loyalty to his club rather than simply demanding a move. The decent opposite to the likes of Lukaku, who petulantly forces through moves when the mood takes him, with no regard or respect for contracts or the people who have helped him.

    Good on mooy.. Obviously doesn't want to stay at Huddersfield but is decent enough a lad to sign a contract which helps them out in future. Fair play to him

    Very talented busy midfielder. Brighton fans must be very pleased, Terriers fans must be distraught, you probably didn't need telling that you really needed him this season.

    why is everyone acting like its strange? he signed a 3 year contract with terriers, going out on loan for the next year, presumably return for 2 more years after or they will sell/loan him after? this is called business, you dont have someone on your books for the last year of his contract and hes not playing with you, so you extend the contract so he returns and if needs be you sell him after

    Not a bad bit of business, quite a common sense approach by Huddersfield, keeps the player happy and means they don't lose him on a free transfer next summer after a season of sulking. Can see this approach being used a bit more by Championship clubs.

    Go Brighton.
    Just dont make a hash of it like last season.
    Youre a good team in a great city.
    Everybody wants to be in Brighton - a city with no negativity towards anybody.

    Good to see brighton spending within their limits - we wont do a coventry or portsmouth thats for sure. And wont pay dumb money for an overrated 'name'.
    A good model for football.

    Mooy wanted Premiership football. Brighton wanted Mooy, but either couldn't or wouldn't meet Towns asking price. Good business from Town rather than have a disillusioned player in the team make him sign a new contract then loan him out. That way either his value goes up due to his performances in the Premiership then sell or he comes back with more Premiership experience. Win win scenario for Town

    Really class player and a really good bloke, the Brighton fans will soon realise just how good he is. Always given his best for Huddersfield and sad to see him go, most of the Town fans will wish him all the best. Big thank you Aaron for helping my lad watch premier football for two seasons.

    To be fair in a round about way Town have done good business here. Now we know the squad for the season. Bar any January additions.
    We can be competitive in the championship. A few seasons ago we would have bit your hand off to be mid table, with a bit of confidence and bottle going forward we can give anyone a game in this league good luck Aaron maybe see you again soon n welcome Trevoh too UTT

    Thanks Aaron for the memories - a top player the like of which I never thought I’d see at Town. Not happy that it has all gone down on deadline day so we had no time to bring in a replacement. Chalobah is more of a defensive midfielder. More evidence of Siewert’s naivety. Hopefully Matty Daly can come in and make a name for himself - looked very impressive at the end of last season.
